Forum on Law, Culture & Society’s International Short Film Competition

The call for entries for the annual Forum on Law, Culture & Society’s International Short Film Competition on a legal/justice theme is now open!

Winning shorts will be screened at the FOLCS Awards Night during the eighth annual Forum Film Festival in New York City in October 2013.

Each year the Forum Film Festival features renowned filmmakers, actors, writers, journalists, public intellectuals, and members of the legal profession. The Film Festival also attracts overflowing and diverse crowds of film enthusiasts, which provides a great platform for showcasing your winning work. Past Forum guests have included acclaimed film directors Oliver Stone and Robert Benton, actor and director Bob Balaban, screenwriters Henry Bean and Larry A. Gross, and actors John Turturro, David Strathairn, Alec Baldwin, and Richard Dreyfuss, and author and Nobel Peace Prize Winner Elie Wiesel.

“Legal theme” may be broadly construed. You are free to choose any subject in which the relationship between law and justice can be fashioned into an original visual story. For example, your film could be about rights that have been denied, harms that have gone unaddressed, the aftereffects of courtroom decisions, government regulations and statutes, or an attempt to take a new look at what “justice” really means. Last year, our entries ranged from animated dramas to reincarnation comedies to community documentaries.

Any genre—i.e., documentary, drama, animation, comedy—is permitted. Films may run a maximum of 15 minutes; there is no minimum runtime requirement.

Students of any age, independent filmmakers, and amateur/aspiring filmmakers are all invited to enter!

Awards this year include:
Best Short: This award will be given to the film that ranks highest with the judges overall in story, originality, and production quality. Awards will also be given to 2nd and 3rd runner-ups.
Best Screenplay: An award show favorite, this prize will be given to the short that has the best characters, plot, and storyline.
Personal Piece: This is a chance to tell your story about an experience with the justice system. You may do this in any way you choose—personal narrative, documentary style, interviews, pictures, clips, drawings, etc.—but you must tell YOUR own personal nonfiction story.
Clara S. Foltz Award: Named after one of the earliest female lawyers (who argued her own case for admission to law school and went on to become the first woman Deputy District Attorney in the United States, among many other influential accomplishments) this award has been created to honor women making strides in filmmaking. To qualify for this award, the producer and/or director of the short must be a female.
Audience Favorite: The winner of this award will be chosen from among the finalist shorts by audience members at the FOLCS Awards Night.
*All films will automatically be considered for Best Short, 2nd and 3rd Places, and Best Screenplay. Please indicate on the entry form if you wish to be considered for any other categories.

Deadline: Entries must be received by the end of the day on Friday, July 19, 2013.

Summer fellowship opportunity in Chicago

Y.O.U. logo

Youth Organizations Umbrella (Y.O.U.) is pleased to announce its Inspire Fellows Program for the summer of 2013. The fellowship offers graduate and upper-undergraduate students a full-time opportunity to learn best-practices in youth development and to prepare for a career in youth development, education, or the non-profit sector.

Inspire Fellows serve as workshop leaders and counselors for Y.O.U.’s 9-week summer program. Fellows are chosen to develop and facilitate specific workshops in one of three areas: arts and literature, STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math), or recreational activities. Additionally, all fellows help lead discussions and workshops on life skills topics.

Primary responsibilities of Inspire Fellows include:

  • Develop and facilitate youth activities in your chosen area that promote academic, social, and emotional development.
  • Supervise youth activities in a safe, sensitive, developmentally appropriate, positive manner.
  • Maintain positive, supportive relationships with youth.
  • Nurture supportive relationships with parents, school administrators, teachers, students, and community representatives.
  • Develop and maintain good working relationships with supervisors, coworkers, and volunteers within Y.O.U., and with others in the community who offer information about, resources for, or services to young people in Evanston.
  • Maintain timely and accurate records concerning youth participation and outcomes.
  • Identify and recommend opportunities for continuous improvement in Y.O.U. programming.

The Fellowship experience offers a unique opportunity for growth for students thinking about a career in youth development, education, the arts, or non-profits. Fellows have close supervision of their work and are provided with both formal and informal feedback to help them grow. In this way, fellows develop their leadership skills, enhance their understanding of youth development, and build their non-profit management skills.

The Fellowship runs full time from June 10 through August 16. The first week offers Fellows a comprehensive orientation and training on Y.O.U., non-profit management, and positive youth development. The next nine weeks consist of high-impact summer programming.

The Fellowship offers a stipend of $1,000. (Y.O.U. is also glad to provide documentation to any students who receive support from their universities for summer employment with a non-profit organization).
