(Patrick, Urho, Ur-who?)\" class=\"wp-image-172\" srcset=\"https:\/\/engage.augsburg.edu\/zobitz\/files\/2021\/03\/Screen-Shot-2021-03-11-at-1.40.24-PM-1024x391.png 1024w, https:\/\/engage.augsburg.edu\/zobitz\/files\/2021\/03\/Screen-Shot-2021-03-11-at-1.40.24-PM-300x114.png 300w, https:\/\/engage.augsburg.edu\/zobitz\/files\/2021\/03\/Screen-Shot-2021-03-11-at-1.40.24-PM-768x293.png 768w, https:\/\/engage.augsburg.edu\/zobitz\/files\/2021\/03\/Screen-Shot-2021-03-11-at-1.40.24-PM.png 1216w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>A bit of context.\u00a0\u00a0<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"http:\/\/www.sainturho.com\/index.htm\" target=\"_blank\">St. Urho is the so-called patron saint of Finland<\/a>, who saved Finland from a scrouge of grasshoppers.\u00a0 It is celebrated on March 16, the day before St. Patrick\u2019s Day. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I grew up in Northern Minnesota, which has one of the\u00a0<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Finnish_Americans\" target=\"_blank\">largest enclaves of Finnish immigrants to the United States<\/a>. Growing up I remember people wearing purple on St. Urho\u2019s Day, as a point of Finnish pride.\u00a0<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/friendsoffinland.org\/st-urhos-day\/\" target=\"_blank\">Finland, Minnesota has an annual celebration<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To be honest \u2013 St. Patrick\u2019s Day was just that \u2026 a day.\u00a0 I would call it good if I was able to eat a bowl of Lucky Charms cereal on that day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Reading the history of the St. Urho&#8217;s day, it doesn\u2019t take long to see that, this holiday is decidedly a modern fictional creation.\u00a0 \u00a0Perhaps some of you reading this may laugh and scoff at those silly Rangers (people from the Iron Range in Northern Minnesota).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However since I am in Finland this spring, I decided to pose this question on a local Facebook community group in Kuopio:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"992\" height=\"850\" src=\"https:\/\/engage.augsburg.edu\/zobitz\/files\/2021\/03\/Screen-Shot-2021-03-11-at-9.42.01-AM.png\" alt=\"I asked a local facebook group if they celebrate St. Urho in Finland.\" class=\"wp-image-173\" srcset=\"https:\/\/engage.augsburg.edu\/zobitz\/files\/2021\/03\/Screen-Shot-2021-03-11-at-9.42.01-AM.png 992w, https:\/\/engage.augsburg.edu\/zobitz\/files\/2021\/03\/Screen-Shot-2021-03-11-at-9.42.01-AM-300x257.png 300w, https:\/\/engage.augsburg.edu\/zobitz\/files\/2021\/03\/Screen-Shot-2021-03-11-at-9.42.01-AM-768x658.png 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 992px) 100vw, 992px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Being in the time of COVID, this was the best that I could do in terms of local, on the ground research.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here is why I am interested in this question.&nbsp; I know that immigrants adapt elements of their home culture in unique and perhaps distorted ways.&nbsp; Very rarely does the home culture re-appropriate those elements.&nbsp; St. Urho\u2019s Day would be a unique case where this occurs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Posting to the facebook group exceeded my expectations. (This is a very positive facebook group in general.)&nbsp; Someone even pointed to a documentary made by&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/areena.yle.fi\/1-4301503?utm_medium=social&amp;utm_campaign=areena-ios-share&amp;fbclid=IwAR1IpOjIPskUjng96MuQyezOmtLR_uPXsSqS8gmv3FStzM5H-M-m5PwFfFY\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">the Finnish TV service about Finland, Minnesota<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The general sentiment is St. Urho-  as I know it &#8211; is not celebrated in Finland, but several people seem to be interested in the holiday.\u00a0 (As someone said \u2013 if it gives you a reason to celebrate, why not?)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And perhaps a \u201cSaint Urho\u201d may not seem that farfetched and could have its own mythology:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Urho_Kekkonen\" target=\"_blank\">Urho Kekkonen<\/a>\u00a0is the longest serving President of Finland \u2013 and is well-regarded in Finland (and perhaps by Finnish immigrants).\u00a0 They even celebrate him at\u00a0<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.urhospub.fi\/\" target=\"_blank\">St Urho\u2019s Pub<\/a>\u00a0in Helsinki.<\/li><li>I was told the local\u00a0<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/kups.fi\/\" target=\"_blank\">Kuopio soccer team<\/a>\u00a0was\u00a0<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Kuopion_Palloseura\" target=\"_blank\">founded on this date (March 16) in 1923<\/a>;\u00a0 one of the best players in the squad is\u00a0<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/g.co\/kgs\/sYm4DE\" target=\"_blank\">Urho Nissil\u00e4<\/a>.\u00a0<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Coincidence?  Perhaps not.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I may have unintentionally started a new holiday in a country that I am visiting. If that is the case, I declare it probably should have a unique pastry associated with it.\u00a0 I would certainly welcome an encore performance of the\u00a0<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/engage.augsburg.edu\/zobitz\/2021\/02\/05\/runeberg-day-exploring-finnish-pastry-2\/\" target=\"_blank\">Runeburg torte<\/a>\u00a0or\u00a0<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/engage.augsburg.edu\/zobitz\/2021\/02\/16\/exploring-finnish-pastries-laskiaispulla\/\" target=\"_blank\">laskiaispulla<\/a>\u00a0(perhaps with blueberry?)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So whether or not you choose to celebrate St. Urho (or it\u2019s more well-known cousin) St. Patrick, I wish you a happy spring.
