Whether you are writing for a department website, an email on behalf of the college or one of its departments, or anything else, follow these guidelines. Here is the content of the document in full.<!--more--><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h2>Brand Voice (Tone and Character)<\/h2>\n<p>The brand voice addresses how we convey the Augsburg story in writing, including through theme, word choice, and prose style. Employing a tone and character consistent with the college\u2019s positioning and brand values\u2014and doing so consistently across various media\u2014is as important as selecting the right images and typefaces. As with photo selection and design choices, the appropriate tone and character will vary somewhat based on audience: an \u201cinstitutional\u201d tone may be appropriate when communicating the college\u2019s mission and vision in the broadest sense, which will be different from the tone used in writing for prospective first-year students or alumni audiences.<\/p>\n<h2>Augsburg\u2019s voice is: Authentic<\/h2>\n<p>Auggies are<strong> friendly, genuine, hands-on, adventurous, and smart.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">1.<strong style=\"font-size: 16px;\">\u00a0Friendly<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px;\"><em style=\"font-size: 16px;\">What we mean<\/em><br style=\"font-size: 16px;\" \/><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\"> Welcoming, inclusive, neighborly, accessible, supportive, and helpful, but not overbearing<br \/>\n<\/span><br style=\"font-size: 16px;\" \/><em style=\"font-size: 16px;\">How does friendly sound?<\/em><br style=\"font-size: 16px;\" \/><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\"> Conversational, warm, responsive; not lofty, pompous, or overly formal; connecting with people in a personal way<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">2.\u00a0<strong style=\"font-size: 16px;\">Genuine<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px;\"><em style=\"font-size: 16px;\">What we mean<\/em><br style=\"font-size: 16px;\" \/><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\"> Honest, natural, sincere, real, familiar, but not folksy<br \/>\n<\/span><br style=\"font-size: 16px;\" \/><em style=\"font-size: 16px;\">How does genuine sound?<\/em><br style=\"font-size: 16px;\" \/><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\"> Write how you would speak; straightforward; don\u2019t use eight words when two will do; simplified language, but not dumbed-down<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">3.\u00a0<strong>Adventurous<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px;\"><em style=\"font-size: 16px;\">What we mean<\/em><br style=\"font-size: 16px;\" \/><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\"> Experimental, at the forefront, innovative, courageous, inventive, bold<br \/>\n<\/span><br style=\"font-size: 16px;\" \/><em style=\"font-size: 16px;\">How does adventurous sound?<\/em><br style=\"font-size: 16px;\" \/><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\"> Write with vision; creative and clever, but not goofy; cause excitement and enthusiasm<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">4.\u00a0<strong>Hands-on<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px;\"><em style=\"font-size: 16px;\">What we mean<\/em><br style=\"font-size: 16px;\" \/><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\"> Experiential, discovering, practical, learn by doing; out in the community, service-learning<br \/>\n<\/span><br style=\"font-size: 16px;\" \/><em style=\"font-size: 16px;\">How does hands-on sound?<\/em><br style=\"font-size: 16px;\" \/><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\"> Compelling, effective, motivational; soul-searching, but not daydreamers<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">5.\u00a0<strong>Smart<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px;\"><em style=\"font-size: 16px;\">What we mean<\/em><br style=\"font-size: 16px;\" \/><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\"> Confident, but not arrogant; intelligent, but not stodgy; clever, but not cynical<br \/>\n<\/span><br style=\"font-size: 16px;\" \/><em style=\"font-size: 16px;\">How does smart sound?<\/em><br style=\"font-size: 16px;\" \/><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\"> We like to talk about outcomes, tell success stories; use language that encourages, but doesn\u2019t patronize or confuse<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Okay, so we want to write conversationally, but how far can I go?<\/h2>\n<p>You are free to<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Use contractions<\/li>\n<li>Break up longer sentences with ellipses, em dashes, and semicolons<\/li>\n<li>Write in first and second person when appropriate<\/li>\n<li>Start sentences with \u201cand\u201d or \u201cbut\u201d<\/li>\n<li>Ask the reader hypothetical or rhetorical questions<\/li>\n<li>Write to your target audience<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>But shy away from<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Ending sentences with prepositions<\/li>\n<li>Using slang and clich\u00e9s<\/li>\n<li>Writing with a passive voice<\/li>\n<li>Abbreviations or acronyms without spelling the words out on first mention<\/li>\n<li>Personal opinions<\/li>\n<li>Too many exclamation points<\/li>\n<li>Redundancy<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Therefore,<\/h3>\n<p><strong>Write like this \u2026<\/strong><br \/>\nSet in the vibrant Cedar-Riverside neighborhood in the heart of the Twin Cities, Augsburg College offers the benefits of a friendly, close-knit campus in a bustling city.
