The 2019 Essay Topic –

Abraham Lincoln was one of our greatest Presidents. Prior to his election, Lincoln faced repeated personal and professional defeats and disappointments. As a young man, he had to work constantly to support his family. He failed in business, was engaged to be married but lost his fiancé to typhoid. He suffered a breakdown and had to be hospitalized for an extended period of time, and he was defeated in several political races. In spite of all this, Lincoln persevered and ultimately succeeded. He became one of the greatest Presidents in the history of the United States.

Our law firm represents many people who display tremendous perseverance and courage in the face of terrible tragedy and loss. Often, these same people find ways to bring about something positive and constructive in their lives and the lives of others, even as they struggle through a painful loss.

How have you faced tragedy, loss or defeat, and found ways to overcome it in your own life? What role does that tragedy or loss play in your aspirations for college or further education?
